White Wolf Watching

Arctic Wolf
Original pastel 23" x 12.5" framed  -  Sold

This painting is based upon one of the UK Wolf Conservation Trusts gorgeous wolves. I loved the intelligence and intensity of his stare.

Pale Grace

Arctic Wolf
Original pastel  -  Sold

This painting earned me the 'Most Improved Artist' award at the MIWAS exhibition 2013

This painting is based around some of the most beautiful creatures I have ever seen, Arctic Wolves. I was immensely privileged to see these gorgeous creatures first hand after a visit to the Wolf Conservation Centre. These are the very first Arctic Wolves in this country and they are quite simply, breathtakingly beautiful. This one is still only a juvenile and so his coat is still quite dark in places. They don't become completely white until they are about 5 years old!

Lone Wolf

Original pastel -  Sold

Once again my love affair with wolves continues, I will never get tired of looking at them or trying to capture them on paper.

This simple portrait just appealed to me. The wolf casually glancing backwards over its shoulder, enigmatic and aloof as always, gazing into the distance with goodness only knows what on his mind. He was just quite simply ...... beautiful.

Eye of the Beholder

Wolf
Original pastel -  Sold

I am absolutely fascinated by the intense colours and penetrating power of wolves eyes, they just seem to hypnotise you! In this small piece I simply wanted to focus purely on the fantastic strength and icy, focused composure those eyes can have. I chose to crop it very tightly in a letter box format to add impact to the image, it really is all about the stare!!!

He Ain't Heavy

African Hunting Dogs
Original pastel 30" x 24.5" framed - Price on Application

In 2010 I had the amazing experience of traveling to the Selous game reserve in Tanzania on safari. I saw many wonderful creatures during my brief visit, but the one species that I had quietly hoped to see above all others was the African Hunting Dog, or Painted Dog as they are commonly known.

I knew the chances were slim as these stunning creatures are seriously endangered in the wild and are notoriously elusive. I'm sure then, that you can imagine my delight when we were fortunate enough to have precious encounters with two individual packs!

These particular dogs were in a pack of about ten or so. It was the middle of the day and we found them lazing in a hollow under the shelter of some trees. Despite the intense heat of the day many of them were still bundled up together, sprawling over each other in the social manner that these fantastic dogs are so well known for. As I sat watching them, one lifted his head, (squashing his companion in the process) and looked straight at me! For the briefest of moments I experienced an incredible thrill as I looked deep into the eyes of this beautiful and much maligned creature.

Lament

Wolf
Original pastel -  Sold

In Lament I wanted to try to portray some of the captivating power of that soul penetrating call. By stripping back the image to the most basic of colour palettes and background I hoped to create some of that sense of nature at its most primal and basic. A wolf laying bare it's soul to the world. I was genuinely pleased with how producing this picture made me feel and how it continues to make me feel when I look at it now. I hope it touches base with you too.

  • Giclee print, mounted size: 15.75" x 19.75" - £40

Raw Ruaha

African Lion
Original pastel 23.5" x 17.5" framed - Price on Application

This is my first picture from my recent trip to Africa. There were many amazing encounters with wildlife on this trip and these lions were no exception.

Whilst in Ruaha we came across a group of six or seven young male lions who had banded together. The afternoon heat was intense and they were resting not too far from the river under the shelter of some trees. To be so close to such incredibly powerful animals was truly humbling. Something about seeing them in their natural environment empowered them beyond all belief. Sitting inside my little land rover looking at them through my open window I felt a thrill of pure fear, adrenaline and excitement. Also a true sense of privilege. An encounter such as this was something I had dreamt of for many many years.

Ice Maiden

Snow Leopard

Original pastel 33" x 28" framed - Price on Application

Snow Leopards are majestic, enigmatic creatures and have always been a particular favourite of mine. They are critically endangered in the wild and are notoriously difficult to locate, not only because of the small numbers remaining, but also because of the remote and inhospitable terrain in which they live. As a consequence I always feel immensely privileged when I am able to see these magnificent animals at such close quarters.

I chose to paint this image, because I wanted to try to capture some of that wonderful vitality and power. Snow leopards are so exquisitely beautiful that sometimes I think it’s easy to forget just what a truly fearsome predator they are.

Stealth

Wolf
Original pastel  -  Sold

Wolves have been unjustly persecuted for centuries. It is only in these now slightly more enlightened times that they have become recognised for the skilled hunters and loyal pack animals that they are and efforts have been undertaken to conserve these wonderful creatures.

Wolves have an intensity and presence that it is truly thrilling to experience. Their eyes really do seem to hypnotise and can make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up! I wanted to try to portray some of that magnetism, power and charisma in Stealth.

Eye of Sumatra

Sumatran Tiger
Original pastel  -  Sold

Of all the subspecies of tigers, for me, the Sumatran has something just that little bit special.

I have been fortunate to see Siberian and Bengal tigers before but it wasn’t until a recent trip to the Wildlife Heritage Foundation that I had my first encounter with a Sumatran tiger. There is a ferocity and energy in their being that sends a tingle down my spine and I was completely captivated by that awesome eye!

Prince of the Rainforest

Ocelot
Original pastel -  Sold

Everyone loves the big cats. They’re so imposing and powerful, but as a consequence sometimes I think the smaller cats get overlooked, which is a shame because they are equally as beautiful and awe inspiring in their own right.

Ocelots are exquisitely beautiful. They have wonderful markings, particularly on their faces, and their coats are dense and luxurious. They are incredibly neat and compact and just ooze power and suppleness.

I called this painting ‘Prince of the Rainforest’, because although ocelots can be found in scrubland, it currently thrives in the rain forests. With large cats such as the jaguar and leopard inhabiting rain forests too ‘prince’ seemed like an appropriate honour.

Contemplation

Bongo
Original pastel 27" x 24" framed - Price on Application

Bongo are the largest forest dwelling antelope and despite being quite heavy set and having a slightly unusual posture in that they’re almost hunchbacked, they still manage to maintain an air of grace. Although located in west and central Africa and Kenya, they have suffered greatly through habitat destruction over the years and are now classified as endangered in the wild.

Both male and female bongo have horns that spiral upwards in one complete twist, however, on a visit to my local zoo, I noticed one particular bongo who had one horn twisted at an unusual angle. I was interested in how this seemed to transform her whole face and the way he looked compared to the others. I then began to wonder what may have happened to her for the horn to have developed that way, and before I knew it I had my subject!

On the Alert

Golden Lion Tamarin
Original pastel 18.5" x 16" framed - Price on Application

‘On the Alert’ was my first real endeavor with pastel pencils and I was pleased with the results. Quite apart from their wonderful characters the stunning colours of the golden lion tamarin are just too tempting to resist and trying to capture them was quite a challenge. Something I’m sure I’ll be taking on again some time in the future.
